ANNOUNCEMENTS

Each year, a group of ladies from the Bountiful High Class of 1967 collects money to donate to worthy causes. Last year they sent their donation to the Utah Food Bank. This year they have decided to donate to the Bountiful High Connection Center. It would be wonderful if classmates could chip in and help. Jan Stephensen Talbot, who is spearheading this year's effort, indicates she has, to date, collected some money, fleece blankets, and some socks. The group is getting together the first week of December, and Jan is hoping that additional items/money can be collected before they we meet. You can contact Jan at janstalbot1@gmail.com. Cody Case, Connection Center Coordinator at Bountiful High School, explains what the Center does:

Hi Class of 1967-

Thanks for your interest in Bountiful High Connection Center. I want to let you know what can be done to support students at Bountiful High. Here is a video that was made about our centers in Davis School district:

Teen Centers | Davis Education Foundation

A Teen Center is more than just a room—it’s a lifeline. These supportive spaces within our high schools offer vital resources that help students overcome challenges outside the classroom, providing the stability they need to focus on their education. By meeting basic needs such as food, hygiene, academic support, and personal guidance, Teen Centers empower students to stay engaged in school and succeed in every area of their lives.

Open to all students enrolled in Davis School District, Teen Centers provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where every individual is valued and supported. These centers serve as a safe haven for students seeking assistance, regardless of their living situation or financial circumstances. Here, students find a community that not only provides essential resources but also fosters hope and resilience, allowing them to focus on their education and future. I won’t use names to protect identities, but I will share the impact on the student’s life.

My first example is a girl from Ecuador that I met the first week of school, she came here seeking asylum with her mom and dad and little sister. Currently the family is living with family and is unable to work until their asylum status comes through. The family had to flee Ecuador because they were being threatened and the girl's grandfather was killed and the family continued to receive threats. When I met with the family, the parents shared that the 15-yr-old had never been able to attend school. In Ecuador, if there is a disability, they won’t let them attend. This girl has Down Syndrome. We helped her get tested and had translators come in and find out what the family needed. Because of the generosity of donors, we were able to get the family, clothes, shoes, hygiene items, food, school supplies. As I was sitting with the family they share that their daughter needed surgery on her ear and they had temporary insurance but not the means to pay the copay or deductible. Because of donors like you we were able to help get the medical care she needed. She has been attending BHS for one month and is thriving!

Another family I was working with had their power turned off. This family had 5 kids, and it was January and only about 10 degrees outside. The mom was desperate and had no other resources to turn to get heat for her family. The kids ranged in age from 17 to 5. Thanks to generous donations we were able to get their heat back on and figure out a way to help with budgeting for those times when money is tight. I didn’t learn about this family until after Christmas, but we were able to provide clothes and shoes, laundry soap, food and hygiene items.

Just this week we found out a family of 7 kids, ranging in age  from 1 to 15, has been evicted and are living in a motel. We were able to offer laundry services in our center and, thanks to donors, we were able to help them with food, diapers, and a warm meal. The dad was beyond grateful, and I could tell the family didn’t receive kindness very often or meet someone who offered to help without judgment.

I have a 16-yr-old student whose mom just didn’t want her anymore and sent her to live with a friend. The friend lets her live there but doesn’t like it and the first of the year started charging her $325 a month. The girl works at Lagoon, and we just got her a job at BHS doing custodial work when Lagoon ends. We help this girl with all her clothing, shoes, hygiene, and give gift cards for groceries and 2 eat outs so she can just be a kid sometimes. All those resources are because of generous people like you! We can keep this girl afloat and as of Friday she has straight A’s except for one B+. I am so proud of her. When I first met with her last year, her anxiety was so bad that she kept pulling out her hair and eyebrows. This year her hair is filling in and we were able to get her the in with a therapist for her mental health.

Thanks for reading about a few students at Bountiful High, we are beyond grateful for people that hear or see the need and help us help these students feel value and be able to be kids! At Bountiful High we are always looking for donors to help with our centers. We accept cash donations, gift cards for fast food $10-15, and grocery gift cards from Smiths, Walmart, Lee’s market or Target in any amount. If a check is written, please write it to Bountiful High Connection Center and it will stay at Bountiful High. We collect new socks, underwear all sizes and coats.

Thanks for reaching out to us we appreciate you!
